US Central Command announced that it carried out strikes on Iranian radar and drone command centers in the Goruk region and on Qeshm Island in response to the downing of a US MQ-1 drone in international waters. US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Monday that it had carried out strikes against Iranian radar and drone command-and-control centers in the Goruk region and Qeshm Island, The Caspian Post reports, citing Yeni Şafak.

The operation was in response to Iranian actions, including the downing of a US MQ-1 drone in international waters over the weekend. “In response to Iran’s unjustified aggression, US warplanes engaged Iranian air defense systems, a ground control station, and two one-way attack drones that posed a clear threat to vessels transiting the region’s waters,” CENTCOM said in a statement.

The strikes came despite a fragile US-Iran ceasefire that has been in place since April 8, mediated by Pakistan. CENTCOM stated that no US personnel were harmed during the operation. “CENTCOM will continue to protect US assets and interests in response to Iran’s unjustified aggression during the ongoing ceasefire process,” the statement added. The strike marks a significant escalation, as it is the first known US attack on Iranian territory since the ceasefire took effect, following earlier naval interceptions and US-Israeli airstrikes on Iranian boats near the Strait of Hormuz.
