Kazakh Leader Applauds Moratinos’ Appointment as UN Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has met with Miguel Ángel Moratinos, UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for the UN Alliance of Civilizations, and welcomed him on his appointment as UN Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia.

The president highlighted Kazakhstan’s strong commitment to collaborating with the UN Alliance of Civilizations, describing it as a key platform for promoting mutual understanding and respect across cultures, civilizations, and religions, The Caspian Post reports via Kazakh media.

During the meeting, the president expressed gratitude for the Alliance’s continued support, particularly in organizing the Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions and co-hosting a special session on protecting religious sites.

Moratinos praised Kazakhstan’s ongoing reforms and expressed hope that the Congress’ outcomes would strengthen peace, reconciliation, and interfaith dialogue.

The meeting concluded with President Tokayev congratulating Moratinos on being awarded the Astana International Prize for Contribution to Interfaith Dialogue. Earlier reports noted that Tokayev has consistently emphasized the importance of preserving interfaith and interethnic tolerance and fostering mutual respect.
