Kazakhstan is deepening its energy partnerships with China as KazMunayGas and China Oilfield Services Limited (COSL) sign a major cooperation agreement aimed at transforming oilfield services and technology.
The framework deal was inked in Astana during high-level talks between KMG CEO Askhat Khassenov and COSL Chief Executive Zhao Shunqiang, marking a new phase in Kazakhstan-China energy collaboration, The Caspian Post reports via Kazakh media.
The agreement sets the stage for expanded cooperation across key areas, including drilling services, well maintenance, and advanced oilfield technologies. A major focus is innovation, with KMG Engineering LLP already working alongside COSL to introduce cutting-edge solutions in field development and drilling operations.
Another pillar of the partnership is workforce development. Kazakh specialists will undergo training at COSL’s production facilities in China-an effort designed to strengthen local expertise and modernize Kazakhstan’s oilfield service sector.
Khassenov highlighted the strategic importance of China National Offshore Oil Corporation as a long-standing partner in geological exploration, emphasizing that collaboration with COSL will help elevate the capabilities of domestic service companies through technology transfer and shared expertise.
The agreement also prioritizes joint project participation and increasing local content, aligning with Kazakhstan’s broader push to build a more competitive and self-sufficient energy industry.
Founded in 2001, COSL has grown into one of the world’s leading oilfield service providers, delivering integrated solutions across Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe.
