Kazakhstan has officially declined to ratify its mutual legal assistance treaty with Canada.
The decision refers to the Treaty between Canada and the Republic of Kazakhstan on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters, signed in Ottawa on June 25, 2003, The Caspian Post reports, citing Kazakh media.
As stipulated by paragraph 3 of Article 18 of the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated May 30, 2005, titled “On international treaties of the Republic of Kazakhstan,” the country’s Foreign Ministry has been instructed to formally notify Canada, following legal procedures, of Kazakhstan’s decision not to join the agreement.
The decree enters into force from the date of its signing, the document states.
