Kazakhstan Plans Major Upgrade of Transit Corridors

Kazakh Deputy Transport Minister Maksat Kaliakparov has announced that Kazakhstan is gearing up for a major modernization of its transport and transit corridors.

Kaliakparov revealed that the ministry plans to introduce green corridors at border checkpoints to streamline customs procedures for transit cargo, The Caspian Post informs via Kazakh media.

This move aims to significantly speed up cargo processing and improve convenience for carriers. All border checkpoints are currently undergoing comprehensive modernization as part of this effort.

The deputy minister noted a sharp rise in transit activity - up 30-35 per cent each year - and said Kazakhstan is preparing a long-term road development strategy covering 2030, 2035, and 2040. The plan will identify the most promising routes for expansion and create a strong transport framework to boost the country’s transit capacity. An international consultant is assisting in drafting the strategy, which will be presented once finalized.

Kaliakparov added that while the current road network generally meets transit needs, Kazakhstan is planning ahead. A new highway is expected to be built along the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, with a feasibility study already underway.

Another major upgrade is the planned expansion of the Western Europe-Western China corridor to increase its throughput. The project will be synchronized with neighboring countries to avoid bottlenecks and ensure smooth cross-border transit.

“All these initiatives are being implemented under a unified strategic vision,” Kaliakparov emphasized.
