Kazakhstan plans to fully commission a 1GW wind power plant equipped with an energy storage system in the Zhambyl region in the third quarter of 2029.

Energy Minister Yerlan Akkenzhenov announced the timeline following talks with Masdar Chief Development and Investment Officer Abdulla Zayed and UAE Ambassador Mohammed Saeed Mohamed Al-Ariki, The Caspian Post reports, citing Kazakhstan's Energy Ministry.

The project is being developed as part of Kazakhstan’s strategic partnership with Masdar, with total investment estimated at $1.4 billion.

The planned facility will include a 1,000 MW wind farm and a 300 MW energy storage system with a capacity of 600 MWh.

According to officials, the project will increase renewable energy generation and strengthen energy security in southern Kazakhstan.

The storage system is expected to make renewable power generation more stable and flexible by helping account for weather conditions and fluctuations in electricity demand.

Akkenzhenov said the partnership with Masdar supports Kazakhstan’s transition toward carbon neutrality and regional energy security, while also bringing advanced technologies and new opportunities for developing the country’s energy infrastructure.
