Kazakhstan has signed an EPC contract with Russia’s Rosatom for the construction of two power units at the planned Balkhash Nuclear Power Plant in the Almaty Region, with a combined capacity of 2,400 megawatts.

The agreement between Kazakhstan Nuclear Power Plants LLP and Rosatom was signed on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, according to Interfax.

Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev said construction is expected to begin in 2027, while the two units are planned to enter operation within 10 years.

Under the contract, Rosatom will oversee the project across its entire lifecycle. Its responsibilities will include engineering and design, equipment procurement, construction, commissioning and the handover of the completed facility.
