Kazakhstan to Adjust Fuel Prices Closer to Regional Market Rates

The moratorium on increasing AI-92 gasoline prices in Kazakhstan has ended, but authorities promise that sharp price spikes will not occur.

At a government briefing, Vice Minister of Energy Sungat Yessimkhanov said the situation remains under control, with the state actively monitoring the fuel market, The Caspian Post reports via Kazakh media.

He stressed that while a gradual increase in prices is possible, no sudden jump is expected.

Yessimkhanov reminded that similar market adjustments had occurred previously when fuel prices were partially liberalized. Back then, prices remained relatively stable, with no sharp surges. He emphasized that several agencies - including the Ministry of Energy, the Agency for Protection and Development of Competition, and local administrations - are overseeing the market to prevent anti-competitive practices and artificial price inflation.

Wholesale prices and potential excess profits of fuel companies are also under strict monitoring. “I am convinced, and my colleagues confirm, that there will be no sharp increases in fuel prices. A small, gradual market-driven rise is possible, especially considering that fuel costs are much higher in neighboring countries,” Yessimkhanov added.

Current comparisons highlight the price gap in the region. AI-92 gasoline costs around 239 tenge per liter in Kazakhstan, while in neighboring countries:

Russia: 406 tenge per liter

Kyrgyzstan: 453 tenge per liter

Uzbekistan: 505 tenge per liter

The significant price difference raises concerns about potential artificial shortages, as it may be more profitable for some traders to export gasoline rather than sell it domestically.

The government reassures consumers that the market will adjust gradually and transparently, aiming to maintain stability while reflecting regional price dynamics.
