The Committee on Constitutional Legislation, State Structure, Judicial and Legal Issues, and Rules of Procedure of the Jogorku Kenesh (Kyrgyz Parliament) has considered a proposal to voluntarily dissolve the current parliament.
The issue was introduced by MP Ulan Primov, supported by 32 MPs, The Caspian Post reports via Kazakh media.
Primov argued that with less than two months separating the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections, a self-dissolution would help bolster political stability and strengthen the governmental system. He also cited recent changes to the electoral law as part of the rationale for resetting the parliamentary mandate.
After review, the committee forwarded the proposal for consideration by the full Jogorku Kenesh. A parliamentary session will soon be convened - including the Coordination Council - to set a date for this deliberation.
The proposal’s timing coincides with a regional gathering: the summit of Central Asian parliament speakers is also taking place in Bishkek on September 23.
