Kyrgyzstan Detains Officials in Waste Landfill Corruption Case

Several officials and contractors have been detained in Kyrgyzstan over alleged financial damage linked to the construction of a new waste landfill in Bishkek.

The investigation centers on a 2015 municipal project that received 22 million euros to upgrade equipment, purchase specialized machinery, and construct the landfill for the city’s sanitation enterprises, “Tazalyk” and “Bishkek Sanitary Landfill” enterprises, The Caspian Post reports via Kyrgyz media.

Audits revealed that the state suffered losses of around 182 million soms (1.78 million euros).

On January 12, under a criminal case for corruption (Article 336 of the Kyrgyz Criminal Code), the former vice-mayor of Bishkek, the ex-director of “Bishkek Sanitary Landfill”, and heads of contractor companies were detained.
