Kyrgyzstan Names Snow Leopard Its Official National Symbol

The snow leopard has been officially recognized as a national symbol of Kyrgyzstan upon presidential decree #369 dated December 29, 2023.

Following the decree, the Cabinet of Ministers has initiated the drafting of a regulatory legal act to implement its provisions, define the responsibilities of state authorities, and establish measures for the conservation of the snow leopard population, The Caspian Post reports via Kyrgyz media.

The snow leopard, a rare and vulnerable species inhabiting Kyrgyzstan’s high-mountain regions, is celebrated not only as part of the country’s unique natural heritage but also as a symbol of national identity, strength, and freedom, prominently featured in the nation’s culture, folklore, and state symbols.

The designation seeks to unite the efforts of government agencies, scientific and educational institutions, as well as public and international organizations, in the protection and promotion of this iconic species.

The forthcoming Cabinet of Ministers’ resolution will:

Ensure the implementation of the presidential decree;

Strengthen measures to protect snow leopards and their habitats;

Raise public awareness on nature conservation;

Facilitate the use of the snow leopard’s image in cultural diplomacy, enhancing Kyrgyzstan’s international profile.
