Russian Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Roman Chekushev has stated that Russia and Kyrgyzstan are in talks to localize Russian automobile manufacturing in Kyrgyzstan and are aiming to finalize agreements on vehicle supply contracts.
Chekushev made these remarks on the sidelines of the Kyrgyz-Russian Economic Forum, recently held in Cholpon-Ata, The Caspian Post informs via Kyrgyz media.
He noted that there is a growing global trend toward establishing local production facilities in countries where automakers wish to expand their market presence.
“Kyrgyzstan is no exception to this trend. That’s why we expect several discussions to take place regarding the potential localization of Russian automobile manufacturers within the country,” he said.
He emphasized that Russia possesses strong capabilities in both passenger and commercial vehicle production and confirmed Moscow's interest in reaching concrete supply agreements with Kyrgyz partners.
This initiative comes as Russia’s domestic auto industry shows signs of strain. In the first half of 2025, production of passenger vehicles in Russia dropped by 2.1 per cent compared to the same period last year, with a sharp 28 per cent decline recorded in June versus June 2024.
