Azerbaijan and Russia Reach Agreement on Crashed AZAL Plane

In accordance with the understanding reached during the meeting between the Presidents of Azerbaijan and Russia held in the city of Dushanbe on October 9, 2025, the parties have agreed to appropriately resolve issues arising from the crash of an Embraer 190 aircraft belonging to “Azerbaijan Airlines” (AZAL) near the city of Aktau.

These remarks were reflected in a joint statement issued by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan and Russia, The Caspian Post reports, citing AZERTAC.

The statement also noted: “The steps taken demonstrate the joint efforts of the parties to further develop productive cooperation within the framework of allied interaction.

We are confident that the continued development of Azerbaijan-Russia relations, based on mutual respect, trust, and consideration of the interests of both sides, will further strengthen good-neighborly relations and contribute to the expansion of cooperation for the benefit of the peoples of both countries.

We once again express our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in the plane crash and share the pain of this irreparable loss with all those affected by the tragedy.”

The crash occurred on December 25, 2024, in Russian airspace as a result of the unintended operation of an air defense system, and the agreement includes the payment of compensation.
