China has warned that the “law of the jungle” should not be allowed to prevail in Iran amid the ongoing wave of anti-government protests in the country.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi made the remarks during a phone conversation with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, on Thursday, The Caspian Post reports, citing SCMP.
Wang said Beijing was ready to play a “constructive role” in helping resolve differences through dialogue.
Some observers have described the recent unrest in Iran as the most significant since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, with estimated death tolls ranging between 2,000 and 12,000.
According to a statement from China’s foreign ministry, Araghchi told Wang that the demonstrations had been “incited by external forces.” He added that the situation had since stabilized and that Tehran “has prepared countermeasures against foreign interference.”
Araghchi also said that “the door to dialogue remains open” and expressed hope that China would take on a greater role in supporting regional peace.
Wang, for his part, voiced confidence in the Iranian government’s ability to overcome current challenges and maintain national stability, the Chinese statement said.
“China opposes the use or threat of force in international relations, opposes imposing one’s will on other countries, and opposes any regression of the world to the ‘law of the jungle,’” Wang was quoted as saying.
