Air Tanzania has suspended its flights to Russia indefinitely, citing a fresh assessment of operational risks associated with the route.

The airline said the decision took effect on September 4 and was made after a regular review of safety conditions. It emphasized that safety considerations take priority over commercial interests, according to ASTRA.

“We continue to monitor the situation in consultation with the relevant authorities and will announce the resumption of services as soon as the assessment confirms it,” the airline said.

Air Tanzania launched direct flights between Dar es Salaam and Moscow in July 2026. The airline had been expected to operate the route three times a week, with flights continuing on the Dar es Salaam-Moscow-Zanzibar itinerary.

The suspension comes amid growing concerns over the safety of civilian aviation operations in Russian airspace. Earlier, Ukraine called on the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to prohibit civilian aircraft from flying over Russia, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned foreign airlines about the risks of flights to Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency, Rosaviation, later said it had received no notifications from foreign airlines about mass cancellations or changes to flights to Russia.

The agency separately addressed the situation involving Turkish carrier Pegasus, saying some charter flights had been canceled for technical reasons. Pegasus subsequently requested additional flights, which Rosaviation approved.
