Authorities in Russia’s Dagestan Republic have confirmed fires at the port of Makhachkala and the Avar Musical and Drama Theater following a drone attack. No casualties or injuries were reported.

Acting Head of the Republic of Dagestan Fyodor Shchukin said air defenses had repelled an attack by Ukrainian drones and that all aerial targets had been destroyed, according to ASTRA.

Shchukin said that falling drone debris caused fires at port infrastructure in Makhachkala and at the Gamzat Tsadasa Avar Musical and Drama Theater. The fires were quickly extinguished, he said.

“The damaged roof of the Avar Theater will be repaired promptly so that our artists can return to rehearsals and performances as soon as possible, while audiences can continue attending shows,” Shchukin said.

He added that all damaged facilities would be restored.

The Makhachkala Commercial Sea Port is Russia’s only ice-free deep-water port on the Caspian Sea. It operates year-round and handles both liquid and dry cargo.

On September 1, it was reported that the port had set a historic grain-handling record, processing more than 2.9 million tons during the first eight months of the year. Around 1.83 million tons of liquid cargo were also handled.

The port’s dry-cargo harbor features a transshipment complex, berths for general and bulk cargo and containers, a rail and vehicle ferry terminal, and a grain terminal.

Six berths with a combined length of more than 900 meters can accommodate and handle six vessels simultaneously. The commercial port also operates its own transport fleet.
