Russia Approves Bill to Criminalize Crypto Circulation

The Russian government has approved a proposal that would introduce criminal liability for the circulation of cryptocurrency.

According to a source, the Russian government’s legislative commission has approved a draft law that establishes criminal responsibility for the illegal circulation of cryptocurrency, The Caspian Post reports, citing Russian media.

It is reported that the proposed punishments for illegal cryptocurrency exchange include a fine ranging from 100,000 to 300,000 rubles, or alternatively an amount equivalent to one to two years of the offender’s salary. The penalties may also include forced labor or imprisonment for a term of up to four years.

In addition, the draft law specifies that if the offense is committed by an organized group or carried out on a particularly large scale-defined as involving more than 13.5 million rubles-the punishment is increased to up to five years of forced labor or up to seven years of imprisonment.
