Russia Closes Schools and Kindergartens Amid Flu Outbreak

Schools and kindergartens across at least 10 Russian regions have begun introducing widespread quarantine measures amid the spread of influenza and acute respiratory viral infections (ARVI).

The restrictions come despite a nationwide decline in respiratory infections for the second consecutive week, according to ren.tv.

According to weekly bulletins from the Smorodintsev Research Institute of Influenza, flu and ARVI cases in Russia rose for four consecutive weeks after the start of the epidemiological season in September. However, infection numbers have recently begun to fall.

Data from the Federal Service for the Oversight of Consumer Protection and Welfare (Rospotrebnadzor) show that 688,000 respiratory infection cases were recorded during the 40th week of 2026, from September 28 to October 4.

The figure fell to 665,000 cases in the following week, from October 5 to 11.

Despite the recent decline in overall infections, local authorities have introduced quarantine measures in educational institutions across at least 10 regions to limit the spread of respiratory illnesses among children.
