Russia has indicated that restrictions on internet access could remain in place for an indefinite period if authorities consider them necessary for public safety.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the measures would continue for as long as additional steps are required to protect citizens, The Caspian Post reports, citing Anadolu Agency.

Speaking to journalists in Moscow, he stressed that the restrictions are intended to ensure security and are being implemented in line with existing legislation.

According to Peskov, the main priority of the authorities is safeguarding citizens, and the temporary limitations on internet connectivity are part of broader security measures.

He also emphasized that the actions taken by the government comply with the country’s current legal framework.

At the same time, the Kremlin acknowledged that the restrictions could create difficulties for businesses that rely on stable internet access.

Peskov said the economic impact of the measures should be discussed by relevant government agencies in order to minimize potential losses.

The issue has drawn criticism from the public, particularly since Russia’s parliament approved legislation allowing the Federal Security Service to block internet access under certain circumstances. Since then, many users have complained about limited connectivity, especially outside homes and offices.

Reports indicate that mobile internet services have been particularly affected, with stable connections often only available through Wi-Fi networks.
