Russian Missiles Devastate Kyiv's Thermal Plant

A major thermal power plant in Ukraine's capital Kyiv has been almost completely destroyed after being struck by multiple Russian missiles, Ukrainian officials said, triggering serious concerns over heat supply as the city endures extreme winter cold.

Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister for Restoration Oleksii Kuleba said that Russian forces launched five ballistic missiles at the Darnytska Thermal Power Plant. The facility played a critical role in providing heating to residential areas of the capital, The Caspian Post reports via Ukrainian media.

Kuleba said the strike deliberately targeted equipment responsible for heat generation and distribution. The attack came during one of the coldest nights of the season, with temperatures plunging to around -25°C (-13°F), significantly worsening the impact on civilians.

Officials noted that the destruction was compounded by the use of missiles containing fragmentation elements, which also damaged nearby heat pipelines and supporting infrastructure. Since the start of the heating season, the Darnytska plant has reportedly come under fire more than 20 times, underscoring the persistent threat to Ukraine’s energy system.

Emergency responders and repair crews were dispatched to the site as soon as security conditions allowed. Authorities said specialists are now assessing the scale of the damage and working to restore at least partial heating for affected neighborhoods.

The plant supplies heat to parts of Kyiv’s Dniprovskyi and Darnytskyi districts. Officials cautioned that it may take at least two days to determine whether heat delivery can be resumed and how quickly repairs can be completed.

The strike forms part of a broader wave of attacks across Ukraine in early February, with energy and infrastructure facilities among the primary targets. Ukrainian authorities continue to monitor the situation and urge residents to follow safety instructions and emergency guidance as repair efforts continue.
