A Russian military transport aircraft sanctioned by the U.S. landed Sunday at the San Antonio de los Baños military air base in Cuba, raising fresh concerns about Moscow’s activities in the Western Hemisphere.
The aircraft is an Ilyushin Il-76 cargo plane operated by Russian cargo airline Aviacon Zitotrans, which has been sanctioned by the United States, Canada, and Ukraine for its role in supporting Russia’s defense sector and transporting military materiel, The Caspian Post reports, citing Fox News.
Flight-tracking data show the same Il-76 traveled from Russia through stops in the Dominican Republic, Mauritania and Algeria before arriving in Cuba. This aircraft has previously flown similar routes to Venezuela and Nicaragua, where it was linked to deliveries of military equipment.
U.S. officials have not revealed what cargo the plane carried on the recent flight. However, its past missions reportedly involved transporting military hardware such as air defense systems.
The landing comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Havana, with U.S. President Donald Trump declaring a national emergency over Cuba and warning of potential sanctions against countries that supply the island with fuel or other strategic resources.
Analysts say the unexpected arrival of a sanctioned Russian military-linked jet in Cuba is likely to deepen scrutiny of Moscow-Havana ties and further strain U.S.-Russia and U.S.-Cuba relations.
