Türkiye is preparing for a dramatic increase in spending on national defense and security, with funding for the sector set to rise by 229% under the government’s new three-year economic roadmap.

The announcement was made by Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz during a presentation in Ankara of the government’s Medium-Term Economic Program for 2027-2029, according to Türkiye Today.

Yilmaz said achieving greater independence in the defense industry remains a key national priority. Türkiye aims to develop advanced military technologies domestically and increase the production of high-value defense equipment.

“In the defense industry, we aim for Türkiye that independently develops advanced technologies and produces high value-added products,” Yilmaz said.

The additional funding is expected to accelerate ongoing projects involving fighter jets, air defense systems, unmanned aerial vehicles and armored vehicles.

Türkiye also seeks to reduce its reliance on imported military components by expanding domestic production capabilities.

The spending increase comes as Ankara continues to expand its international defense cooperation.

Türkiye recently joined Saudi Arabia and Pakistan in a new trilateral defense agreement that provides for mutual support if one of the three countries comes under armed attack.

Türkiye is also a NATO member, giving its defense modernization plans broader significance for the alliance and regional security.
