Tajikistan Approves 60-Day Visa-Free Stay With Kyrgyzstan

Tajikistan has taken another step toward easing cross-border travel with Kyrgyzstan after its parliament approved an agreement allowing citizens of both countries to stay for up to 60 days without mandatory registration.

On January 9, the Majlisi Namoyandagon, Tajikistan’s lower house of parliament, ratified the agreement signed with Kyrgyzstan on February 1, 2018, The Caspian Post reports via Tajik media.

The decision was reported by the parliamentary newspaper Sadoi Mardum. It remains unclear whether Kyrgyzstan’s parliament has completed the ratification process.

Presenting the document to lawmakers, First Deputy Interior Minister Abdurahmon Alamshozoda said the agreement is designed to strengthen friendly relations, streamline cross-border travel, and create more comfortable conditions for citizens staying in each other’s countries. The deal sets out rules for temporary stays, defines acceptable entry documents, and exempts travelers from registration with local authorities within the agreed period.

While Alamshozoda did not specify the exact length of the visa-free stay during his presentation, later clarification came from MP Shuhrat Ghanizoda, who confirmed that the agreement allows Tajik and Kyrgyz citizens to remain on each other’s territory for up to 60 days without registration.

Ghanizoda said that clearer travel rules will help better protect the rights and legal interests of citizens on both sides.

The move follows a major breakthrough in bilateral relations. In March 2025, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon and Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov signed a historic border agreement in Bishkek, resolving long-standing disputes that had claimed dozens of lives. The two leaders also reopened border crossings that had been closed for more than four years, restoring cross-border movement. The border deal was ratified by both parliaments on March 18-19, marking a new chapter in the Tajikistan-Kyrgyzstan relations.
