Tajikistan Makes Medal Splash in Opening Days of Third CIS Games in Azerbaijan

Tajikistan’s team has made a strong start by securing its first medals in the Third CIS Games in Azerbaijan.

The initial success came from the WT Taekwondo category, where Abdujafar Bahodur (54 kg) and Nurullo Murodov (74 kg) both clinched bronze medals. Their achievements mark significant personal victories and add valuable points to Tajikistan’s overall medal tally, The Caspian Post reports via Tajik media.

Following this, the team’s momentum continued in Sambo wrestling, with Nazarali Kholov (64 kg) and Yosin Hukumatov (71 kg) also winning bronze medals, further boosting the nation’s presence on the scoreboard.

A memorable moment for Tajik fans came during the opening ceremony when young judoka Madina Qurbonzoda proudly carried the national flag in the delegation’s parade.

This year’s event features 1,605 athletes from 10 countries, with Tajikistan represented by 142 competitors. This marks the country’s third participation in the CIS Games. In 2021, Tajikistan won 14 medals and finished 7th overall in Kazan, Russia. Two years later, at the 2023 Minsk Games in Belarus, the country earned 13 medals and ranked 8th among 22 nations.

As the competition progresses, Tajik athletes will take part in boxing, judo, freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling, shooting, and various team sports. Martial arts remain a strong suit for the country, historically delivering its highest medal counts.
