The UN General Assembly has unanimously adopted a landmark resolution titled “The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Creating New Opportunities for Sustainable Development in Central Asia,” an initiative put forward by the Republic of Tajikistan.
The proposal was first introduced by President Emomali Rahmon during the General Debate at the 79th session of the UN General Assembly on September 24, 2024, The Caspian Post reports via Tajik media.
According to Tajikistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the resolution sets a global precedent in forging consensus around the ethical and responsible use of artificial intelligence, calling for the development of self-regulation mechanisms and governance frameworks for AI technologies at both national and regional levels.
A key highlight of the resolution is the proposed creation of a Regional Artificial Intelligence Center in Dushanbe, which will act as a hub for coordinating AI integration and innovation efforts across Central Asia.
“The adoption of this resolution will help build safe, reliable, and trustworthy AI systems that balance regulatory oversight with innovation and self-regulation-creating a model for other regions of the world,” the Foreign Ministry noted in a statement.
The Dushanbe-based AI Center is expected to drive forward several key regional initiatives, including:
Joint training programs and startup support via collaboration among regional technology parks;
Cross-border AI research partnerships between universities, research labs, and scientists;
Development of a regional data center network to boost access to high-performance computing;
Harmonization of national AI monitoring systems, aiming to align ethical and governance principles;
Active engagement in global AI dialogues and partnerships with international organizations.
