Russian citizens currently in Iran have been advised to evacuate through Turkmenistan.

“Dear compatriots! For those who cannot fly out of Iran due to the current situation, a route has been arranged by car through Turkmenistan. Exit is only possible via the ‘Sarakhs’ border crossing on the Iran-Turkmenistan border,” The Caspian Post reports via the Russian Embassy in Ashgabat.

The embassy also noted that Russian citizens must submit a specific set of documents to the Russian Embassy in Iran to obtain approval from Turkmen authorities for the crossing.

Turkmenistan and Iran share a 1,100-kilometer land border as well as a maritime boundary along the Caspian Sea, making the overland evacuation route a viable option for those unable to secure direct flights.

The embassy has urged citizens to follow official instructions carefully and prepare all necessary documentation before attempting the crossing.
