Secretary-General: CIS Leadership Awaits Uzbekistan in 2027

CIS Secretary-General Sergey Lebedev has announced that Uzbekistan will assume the chairmanship of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in 2027.

Lebedev praised the country’s growing leadership role within the regional organization, The Caspian Post reports via Uzbek media.

“We sincerely hope that by 2027, nothing will hinder Uzbekistan from taking on the chairmanship and successfully carrying out this important responsibility,” Lebedev said during a recent statement.

He commended Uzbekistan’s proactive and constructive engagement in CIS affairs over recent years, citing the country's role as a regional convening power. Notably, Tashkent hosted a session of the CIS Economic Council in April 2025, which coincided with the “Innoprom. Central Asia” industrial exhibition and a major regional forum.

“Uzbekistan continues demonstrating its capacity to organize high-level international events, not only in Tashkent but also in cities like Samarkand,” Lebedev added. He also noted that a major conference co-organized with UNESCO will soon take place in Samarkand, with numerous CIS member states expected to participate.

Highlighting Uzbekistan’s contributions to promoting regional cooperation and integration, Lebedev expressed confidence in the country’s leadership and extended his best wishes for continued peace, prosperity, and success in advancing shared CIS objectives.
