Tens of Millions in Bribes: Uzbek Drivers Try to Buy Off Traffic Police

The Uzbek police officers have uncovered dozens of attempted bribes targeting traffic police officers, with the total amount reaching over 177.4 million soums ($14,789).

At least 30 cases were recorded involving drivers trying to avoid responsibility through illegal payments, The Caspian Post reports via Uzbek media.

In one incident in the Bukhara Region, a traffic officer stopped a Chery vehicle during a night patrol and found the driver intoxicated. Both the driver and the car owner faced administrative charges.

In an attempt to escape punishment, the car owner offered a $2,000 bribe. Despite repeated warnings about criminal liability, he was detained while handing over 25 million soums ($2,084).

A similar case occurred in Karshi, where an intoxicated driver of a Chevrolet Lacetti reportedly offered $2,000 to a senior traffic police official to avoid court proceedings and retrieve his impounded car.

Criminal cases have been launched under bribery charges, and investigations are ongoing.
