Uzbek Doctors Make History with Successful Separation of Conjoined Twins

Doctors have successfully performed a rare and highly complex surgical operation to separate conjoined twins in a historic breakthrough for Uzbek medicine.

The procedure took place at the Chirchik branch of the Republican Specialized Scientific and Practical Medical Center for Maternal and Child Health, The Caspian Post informs via Uzbek media.

The twins, born prematurely at 33-34 weeks via cesarean section, underwent the life-saving surgery just nine hours after birth. Medical experts say such an early intervention is extremely rare and posed significant challenges, making the case one of the most complex in the country’s medical history.

A team of highly skilled specialists, led by Professor Bakhtiyar Ergashev - Doctor of Medical Sciences and head of the Neonatal Surgery Center at the Republican Perinatal Center - carried out the five-hour operation using state-of-the-art surgical techniques and continuous neonatal monitoring.

The successful separation marks a major milestone in Uzbekistan’s healthcare development, especially in the fields of pediatric and neonatal surgery.

In recognition of the team’s outstanding achievement, Minister of Health Alisher Khudayarov awarded the medical staff the “Excellence in Health Care of the Republic of Uzbekistan” badge of honor.

Following the procedure, doctors reported that both infants made remarkable progress. Later, they were discharged from the hospital along with their mother and sent home in stable condition.
