Uzbekistan Sounds Alarm Over Flash Flood Risk in Mountain Districts

Uzbekistan’s Hydrometeorological Service, Uzhydromet, has issued a flood alert for several districts across five regions of the country.

The warning cites potential localized flooding due to expected rainfall in mountainous and foothill areas between July 9 and 11, The Caspian Post reports via Uzbek media.

The warning covers the following areas:

Surkhandarya Region: Sariosiyo, Uzun, Altinsay, Denov, Boysun, Sherobod, Shurchi, Qumqorgon, and Muzrabot;

Tashkent Region: Ohangaron, Bustanlyk, Parkent, Piskent, Orta Chirchiq, Yuqori Chirchiq, and the cities of Angren and Almalyk;

Namangan Region: Pop, Kosonsoy, Chortoq, Chust, Namangan, and Yangiqorgon;

Fergana Region: Sokh, Shohimardon, Fergana, and Besharyk;

Andijan Region: Andijan, Asaka, Jalaquduq, Qorgontepa, Pakhtaobod, Izboskan, Khojaobod, Marhamat, and the city of Khonobod.

Authorities are urging residents, tourists, and motorists in these areas to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions, particularly in flood-prone zones. The risk stems from accumulated rainwater runoff that may cause flash flooding or road disruptions.

The flood warning follows a period of extreme heat that recently affected much of Uzbekistan. According to Uzhydromet, temperatures are expected to gradually decline between July 8 and 11, as rain showers move through the region.
