Armenia’s Prosecutor General has submitted a request to the Central Electoral Commission seeking permission to initiate criminal proceedings against former President Robert Kocharyan and two candidates representing the opposition Armenia Alliance.
The request also includes Asatur Kocharyan and Ruslan Barseghyan, who are listed as candidates of the alliance in the 154th and 62nd positions, respectively, The Caspian Post reports, citing Armenian media.
Robert Kocharyan held the office of President of Armenia from 1998 to 2008, after serving as Prime Minister between 1997 and 1998.
Following his departure from office in 2008, Kocharyan faced several legal cases connected to the post-election unrest and violence that took place in Yerevan that same year.
He later returned to active politics ahead of Armenia’s snap parliamentary elections in 2021, becoming the leader of the Armenia Alliance.
In the parliamentary elections held on June 7, 2026, the Armenia Alliance received 9.934 percent of the vote, maintaining its position as a notable, though minority, opposition force in the Armenian parliament.
