Is Armenia About to Get New President?

President of Armenia's National Assembly Alen Simonyan could become the country’s next president, replacing incumbent Vahagn Khachaturyan.

Reports suggest that the issue was discussed during a meeting of the board of the ruling Civil Contract party, The Caspian Post reports via News.am.

Khachaturyan may leave office before the end of his term and could be appointed chief adviser to Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

Several names were reportedly considered as possible candidates for the presidency, including Chief of Staff to the Prime Minister Arayik Harutyunyan, National Assembly President Alen Simonyan, and Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan.

Vahagn Khachaturyan was elected president of Armenia in 2022 for a seven-year term. No official announcement regarding a potential leadership change has been made.
