European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is expected to travel to Armenia next week in a move widely seen as a show of support for Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and his pro-European government following recent parliamentary elections.
Thus, von der Leyen will be joined by European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos during the visit, which is tentatively scheduled for July 1, The Caspian Post reports via Politico.
The trip comes after Pashinyan’s party secured victory in the June parliamentary elections, a vote many observers viewed as a key test of Armenia’s geopolitical direction.
European officials say the visit is intended to reaffirm Brussels’ support for Yerevan as it seeks closer ties with the European Union and reduces its dependence on Russia.
“We have seen the country under intense and sustained pressure from Russia. The visit will be a strong signal of support following the concrete assistance already provided,” an EU official was quoted as saying.
The importance attached to the visit is underscored by the cancellation of the European Commission’s College of Commissioners meeting, originally scheduled for July 1.
The upcoming trip will mark von der Leyen’s second visit to Armenia in less than two months.
