Russia Seeks Talks with Armenia Ahead of Elections

Russian president's press-secretary Dmitry Peskov has said that Russia believes it has the right to discuss political plans with Armenia ahead of upcoming parliamentary elections.

Speaking about the vote, Peskov noted that Moscow wants to better understand Yerevan’s political direction, emphasizing the close historical and strategic ties between the two countries, The Caspian Post reports via Armenian media.

“We consider it our right to clarify and discuss our colleagues’ plans,” he said, referring to Armenia’s leadership.

Peskov noted that recent talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan lasted several hours and were described as frank, useful, and necessary.

The sides exchanged views on:

Armenia’s upcoming elections

Key trade and economic cooperation issues

Peskov also stressed that Moscow prefers not to be repeatedly referenced in discussions surrounding Karabakh.

He added that Armenia understands the limitations of balancing between blocs, noting that simultaneous alignment with the Eurasian Economic Union and the European Union is not feasible.

The Kremlin maintains that membership in the Eurasian Economic Union provides Armenia with opportunities for accelerated economic development.
