Azerbaijan’s Car Market Goes Hybrid Thanks to China

Azerbaijan is witnessing a dramatic shift in its automotive landscape, with hybrid vehicle imports soaring to 18,426 units in the first five months of 2025.

The data, released by the State Statistics Committee, marks a 2.7-fold increase compared to the same period in 2024, The Caspian Post reports, citing local media.

The surge is largely driven by a wave of Chinese-made hybrids, many priced starting from 25,000 manats, making them an attractive option for cost-conscious consumers. This influx of affordable, fuel-efficient cars is reshaping buyer behavior and disrupting the domestic automotive market.

According to industry analysts, the increased availability of hybrids has led to a 30-40 per cent drop in demand for secondhand vehicles, triggering a corresponding decline in their prices. Moreover, the traditional car market is losing ground as more consumers shift to online platforms for purchasing vehicles.

Despite growing popularity, the rise in Chinese hybrid imports is not without challenges. With demand climbing, prices are beginning to rise, and the resale value of these vehicles remains relatively low, as they tend to depreciate quickly. Further complicating the picture is the scarcity of spare parts and high maintenance costs, which are causing concern among potential long-term owners.
