A major ministerial meeting linked to the New Urban Agenda has officially begun in Baku on the opening day of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13), further cementing Azerbaijan’s growing role in global urban development discussions.
The ministerial gathering is being held as a new initiative within the forum and marks an important milestone in reviewing progress on the implementation of the New Urban Agenda, The Caspian Post reports via WUF13 Azerbaijan Operations Company.
Taking place at the midpoint of the agenda’s 20-year implementation period, the meeting provides governments with an opportunity to assess achievements, identify challenges, and shape priorities for the next phase leading up to 2036.
Chaired by Azerbaijan, the event brings together ministers and government representatives to evaluate global urban development strategies and discuss future priorities under the theme of inclusive and sustainable cities.
In line with WUF13’s central theme - “Housing for All: Safe and Sustainable Cities and Human Settlements” - housing policy is expected to take center stage throughout the discussions. Participants will explore how access to housing can drive social inclusion, reduce poverty, boost economic opportunities, and strengthen environmental sustainability and climate resilience.
The meeting also serves as a platform for countries to exchange experiences, address policy gaps, and reinforce commitments to the New Urban Agenda ahead of the high-level review scheduled for 2026 at the United Nations General Assembly.
The program opened with a high-level dialogue involving the Azerbaijani government, UN-Habitat, and UN representatives, followed by ministerial statements outlining national achievements and strategic priorities.
Later in the day, three thematic panels will focus on housing for social inclusion and poverty reduction, housing for urban prosperity and opportunity, and environmentally sustainable, climate-resilient urban development.
The sessions will unite governments, UN agencies, civil society organizations, and local authorities to share practical solutions and policy approaches for the future of cities.
The meeting will conclude with the adoption of a “Chair’s Summary” document, which will contribute to global reporting processes and the final outcome documents of WUF13, including the “Baku Call to Action.”
As part of the broader WUF13 agenda, the ministerial meeting is expected to strengthen the forum’s role as a leading global platform for dialogue, partnership, and action aimed at accelerating sustainable urbanization worldwide.
