Russia has introduced new restrictions on individuals taking large amounts of cash rubles out of the country to Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) member states.
Under a presidential decree signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin, individuals are prohibited from exporting more than 1 million Russian rubles, equivalent to about $11,800, in cash to these destinations, subject to certain exceptions, according to Sputnik Armenia.
Cash exceeding the permitted amount may be confiscated if the restriction is violated.
The new measure significantly lowers the previous threshold for individuals. Russia had previously allowed travelers to take the equivalent of up to $100,000 in cash out of the country.
The earlier restrictions also did not apply to cash ruble exports to Azerbaijan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
The decree introduces the new limits as part of Russia’s broader rules governing the movement of cash across its borders.
