Tech billionaire and Trump adviser Elon Musk met earlier this week with Iran’s envoy to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, to explore potential ways to ease tensions between the US and Iran.

The private meeting, which took place in New York on Monday at a confidential location, lasted over an hour, according to Iranian officials familiar with the discussion, The Caspian Post reports, citing The New York Times.

These officials, speaking anonymously, described the conversation as “positive” and "good news" in light of the historically tense relationship between the US and Iran under President-elect Trump.

The meeting suggests a potential shift in US-Iran relations, which had been marked by a hardline approach during Trump’s first term. Notably, Trump withdrew the US from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), and imposed stringent sanctions on Iran.

However, with Musk’s involvement, there are signs that Iranian leaders are considering the possibility of a new deal that could ease sanctions, opening the door to indirect engagement with the US.

While Iran’s UN mission declined to comment on the meeting, Musk’s role as an adviser to Trump and his upcoming position as co-director of a government efficiency agency suggests he could play a significant role in shaping future US-Iran interactions.
