Chinese Firm to Supply Turbines for Uzbekistan’s Nuclear Power Plant

A trilateral meeting was recently held at the office of CNOS, a subsidiary of China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) responsible for overseas projects.

The meeting brought together representatives from Uzbekistan’s Uzatom Agency, Russia’s State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom, and China’s Shanghai Electric, The Caspian Post reports, citing Uzbek media.

The primary objective of the meeting was to assess Shanghai Electric’s manufacturing capabilities for turbine equipment and explore the potential for adapting this equipment to meet the requirements of the nuclear power plant (NPP) project in Uzbekistan.

During the negotiations, the parties discussed the development, production, and delivery of equipment for the non-nuclear island of the NPP in line with established technical standards. The discussions covered a wide range of technical aspects, including the specific characteristics of the technological equipment needed for the project’s implementation.

The Chinese side proposed the possibility of signing a trilateral agreement between Uzatom, Rosatom, and CNNC. The proposed document would clearly define CNNC’s role and responsibilities in the construction of the nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan, marking a significant step forward in the project’s advancement.

The construction of a nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan is a strategically important initiative aimed at enhancing the country's energy security and supporting its sustainable development. The Uzatom Agency, in cooperation with international partners, is actively working to implement the project, with a strong focus on integrating advanced technologies and collaborating with trusted equipment suppliers.

Shanghai Electric is one of China’s leading manufacturers of power and turbine equipment for nuclear and thermal power plants. The company has extensive experience, having supplied equipment for the non-nuclear islands of 39 nuclear power plants - 37 in China and 2 in Pakistan. Its product range includes turbogenerators with capacities from 50 to 1,240 MW.
