Georgian authorities have arrested 27 people in a major operation targeting activities linked to the so-called “thieves’ world”.

The arrests were carried out by officers from the Central Criminal Police Department in cooperation with Georgia’s General Prosecutor’s Office, The Caspian Post reports via the Interior Ministry.

The charges were brought against six other suspects either in absentia or while they were already serving prison sentences.

Among those charged is Mamuka Chkhaberidze, a “thief in law” currently outside Georgia. Investigators allege that he directed the activities of members of the criminal group.

The suspects organized criminal disputes, settled financial conflicts, and engaged in extortion.

Investigators also accuse them of threatening people with physical violence and murder if they refused to comply with their demands.

During searches, law enforcement officers reportedly seized mobile phones, computer equipment, firearms and ammunition.

The investigation is being conducted under provisions of Georgia’s Criminal Code that carry prison sentences of up to 15 years.

Georgia’s Interior Ministry said the latest operation is part of a broader crackdown on organized criminal activity.

Since the beginning of 2026, 343 people have reportedly been prosecuted for crimes connected to the so-called “thieves’ world,” including eight “thieves in law.”
