India has summoned Iran’s deputy envoy after an Indian crew member was killed in a missile attack on two UAE oil tankers transiting the Strait of Hormuz, as tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate.
Iranian Deputy Chief of Mission Mohamed Javad Hosseini was called in following what officials described as a firm diplomatic response to the deadly maritime incident, The Caspian Post reports via Anadolu Agency.
Earlier, the UAE Ministry of Defense said the tankers Mombasa and Al Bahiyah were struck by Iranian cruise missiles while sailing through Omani territorial waters. One Indian national aboard the Mombasa was killed, while eight crew members were injured, including six Indians and two Ukrainians. Four of the injured were reported to be in serious condition.
The attack comes amid heightened regional tensions after the United States carried out a third consecutive day of military strikes against Iran, saying the operations were aimed at reducing Tehran’s capabilities in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy claimed that the U.S. military had directed the two supertankers onto an unauthorized route through the strait before they were struck and disabled. However, Iranian authorities did not explain how the vessels were hit or explicitly claim responsibility for the attack.
