Saeed Tavakoli, deputy oil minister and head of the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC), has revealed ongoing talks with Russia and Turkmenistan aimed at securing natural gas imports to help cover a potential supply shortfall during the upcoming winter season.

Tavakoli expressed optimism about reaching a favorable agreement, noting that Iran could experience a gas deficit ranging from 300 million to as much as 350-400 million cubic meters per day during colder months, The Caspian Post informs via Turkmen media.

To address this challenge, Iran is implementing multiple initiatives focused on reducing the deficit and improving gas supply efficiency.

Despite these pressures, Tavakoli reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to maintaining its gas exports at last year’s levels. He confirmed that natural gas supplies to Türkiye will continue through 2026, with negotiations underway to potentially extend contracts beyond that date.

Iran boasts the world’s second-largest natural gas reserves, estimated at approximately 34 trillion cubic meters. The country currently operates 22 gas fields and produces more than 1 billion cubic meters of natural gas daily, solidifying its position as a key player in the regional energy sector.
