Russia’s Foreign Ministry announced on Thursday that the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty between the Russian Federation and the Islamic Republic of Iran has officially entered into effect.
The treaty was signed in Moscow on January 17, 2025, by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, The Caspian Post reports citing Iranian media.
According to the Foreign Ministry, it marks “a major milestone in the history of bilateral relations, elevating ties between the two countries to a new stage of comprehensive strategic partnership.”
The agreement outlines key directions for long-term cooperation across priority sectors, ranging from international coordination to regional security.
The two nations are set to strengthen collaboration within multilateral organizations, promote the development of a multipolar world order, and work jointly to enhance regional stability and address shared challenges and threats.
The ministry stressed that the treaty reflects a “strategic choice” by the leadership of both countries to deepen friendly relations and good-neighborly ties, serving the fundamental interests of the Iranian and Russian peoples.
According to the Russian statement, the main provisions of the agreement are as follows:
- The parties are committed to deepening and expanding relations in all areas of mutual interest.
- Moscow and Tehran have agreed to maintain commercial and economic cooperation and to work closely in conducting joint military exercises. If one party faces aggression, the other party shall not assist the aggressor.
- The two countries will not allow their territories to be used to support separatist movements that threaten their territorial integrity.
- The parties oppose the imposition of sanctions and consider them internationally illegal. They will refrain from joining third-party restrictions against each other and guarantee not to use unilateral coercive measures.
- Moscow and Tehran have agreed to enhance media cooperation to counter misinformation and negative propaganda.
- The countries will assist each other in preventing natural and human-made disasters and will cooperate to establish payment infrastructure independent of third countries.
- The gas pipeline from Russia to Iran will pass through the Republic of Azerbaijan, and the parties are negotiating pricing approaches.
- Moscow and Tehran are interested in joint projects in the field of peaceful nuclear energy, including the construction of nuclear power plants.
- The parties will cooperate in combating international terrorism and other threats and challenges.
- The agreement is concluded for a period of 20 years and, upon the expiration of this period, will be automatically extended for an additional five years.
