Tensions are mounting inside notorious Evin Prison in Iran's Tehran city after reports emerged that the facility has been taken over by a police special unit, with prison authorities abandoning the site.
The wife of political prisoner Mostafa Mohammadhassan said the prison is now under the control of NOPO special forces, The Caspian Post reports via Russian media.
Evin Prison - long associated with political detainees and high-profile cases - is reportedly facing a deepening crisis.
“The situation in Evin Prison is very bad. The prison is now in the hands of NOPO forces. They have completely closed the gates, and all prison officials have left. Obtaining food has become extremely difficult, and the prison store is no longer functioning,” she wrote on social media.
Meanwhile, Norway-based human rights group Hengaw Organization for Human Rights claimed that all detainees at the Central Prison of Marivan in Iran’s western Kurdistan province were released shortly after Israeli and American fighter jets struck military and intelligence targets in the city.
Hengaw did not provide details on the number or identities of those freed.
