Iranian airlines have canceled some international flights following tighter US sanctions on the country’s aviation sector, raising concerns about further disruptions to air links between Iran and countries across the region.

Several international flights were reportedly canceled on September 23 after Washington introduced new measures targeting Iran’s aviation industry, according to vietnam.vn.

A tourism agency in Tehran said flights to Baghdad, Muscat, Qatar, Georgia and Azerbaijan had been suspended.

The cancellations followed new sanctions announced on September 21 by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. He warned that the United States would target Iranian airlines and impose sanctions on companies doing business with them.

However, flights to a number of other destinations were still operating. According to the tourism agency, services to China continued, with FlightRadar24 data showing a Mahan Air flight from Tehran landing in Guangzhou. Another flight to Shanghai was also scheduled.

Some flights to Istanbul, Najaf and Dubai remained on the schedule, while a Mahan Airlines service from Kabul to Tehran was also expected to operate.

Information from Tehran International Airport indicated that smaller Iranian carriers, including Varesh, continued to offer some flights to Türkiye and Armenia.

Potential disruptions to flights between Iran and Iraq have also raised concerns among Iraqi travel agents. In Najaf, travel agent Haidar Shamaa said many tourism companies in the city depend on airline bookings to Iranian airports.
