Astana’s Kulanshi Art Space Bridges Kazakh and Spanish Contemporary Art

Kulanshi Art Space in Kazakhstan’s capital Astana has unveiled a new joint exhibition titled “Hola=Salem,” showcasing the works of contemporary artists from Kazakhstan and Spain.

The exhibition features six Spanish artists - Alan Sastre, Ugo Fontela, Alejandra Freymann, Julia Santa Olaya, Victoria Iranzo, and Alejandro Botubol - alongside three Kazakh artists: Zura Assylgazina, Saule Madieva, and Alibek Mergenov, The Caspian Post reports via Kazakh media.

“Hola=Salem” bridges artistic traditions and cultural perspectives by blending the passionate, vibrant expressions of Hispanic art with the evocative, steppe-inspired voices of Kazakh creators. The exhibition invites visitors to experience a unique dialogue between two diverse artistic worlds.

Although some artworks were delayed and are expected to arrive the following week, curator Dr. Leyla Mahat turned the situation into an opportunity for creative innovation. “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade - but we are not cooks, we are artists, so we made art,” she said with a smile.

Kazakh artist Zura Assylgazina revealed that her displayed series was originally intended for a solo exhibition but was later included in this collaborative showcase. She emphasized the variety and energy of the pieces and expressed eagerness to work further with her Spanish colleagues.

Speaking about the exhibition’s audience, Zura said, “Art exhibitions are for everyone - from the general public to students and professionals. These energetic works inspire and energize anyone who views them, even those unfamiliar with art. I recommend everyone take the opportunity to experience this show.”

The “Hola=Salem” exhibition will be open to the public in Astana for the next two months.

In other cultural news, a photo exhibition marking the 34th anniversary of the Semipalatinsk Polygon’s closure was recently held in Bulgaria.
