The number of victims from the deadly blast at the “Plov Center” café in Shchuchinsk, Kazakhstan has risen to nine after two critically injured patients died in intensive care.
The deaths were confirmed by the Akmola Region Health Department, which said doctors had fought to save the most severely injured victims, The Caspian Post reports via Kazakh media.
“With deep regret, we inform you that two of the most critical patients from the hospital in Shchuchinsk have passed away despite all efforts to save them. The total number of victims has reached nine,” the regional health department said in a statement.
Dozens Injured, Patients Airlifted to Astana
Earlier reports said 28 people were injured in the explosion. Five died at the scene, while two succumbed to their injuries in hospital. Several victims were evacuated by air ambulance to Astana for specialized treatment.
As of March 2, four patients remained at the Avicenna-Burabay hospital, while another four were in intensive care at the Akmola Regional Hospital. Health officials emphasized that all available medical staff, equipment and medication have been mobilized to save the remaining patients.
Criminal Case Opened, Owner Detained
The police officers have detained the owner of the “Plov Center.” The prosecutors noted that a criminal case has been launched under Part 3 of Article 292 of Kazakhstan’s Criminal Code - violation of fire safety regulations resulting in the death of two or more people by negligence.
The explosion occurred late on February 26, triggering a powerful blast followed by a fire inside the café. Among the victims was a 16-year-old girl. Six of those killed were reportedly employees of the establishment.
