IAEA Chief to Visit Kazakhstan for High-Level Nuclear Talks

Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi will arrive in Kazakhstan for an official visit from May 25 to 27.

During the visit, Grossi is expected to hold talks with President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. The discussions will focus on expanding cooperation between Kazakhstan and the IAEA, including nuclear safety, science, and medical applications of nuclear technology, The Caspian Post reports via Yeni Şafak.

One of the key outcomes expected from the visit is the signing of a long-term roadmap to deepen cooperation over the next 10 years, along with additional agreements in the field of nuclear science and nuclear medicine.

Grossi previously visited Kazakhstan in 2023, when he also met with President Tokayev to discuss nuclear cooperation.

The visit comes as Kazakhstan continues to play a growing role in global nuclear policy. In 2024, the country held a referendum in which voters supported the construction of its first nuclear power plant. The government later selected Russia’s Rosatom as the lead consortium for the project and emphasized close cooperation with the IAEA.

Kazakhstan is also home to the world’s only IAEA Low Enriched Uranium Bank, located in Oskemen, strengthening its strategic importance in global nuclear fuel management.

Grossi’s regional tour also follows renewed international discussions on Iran’s nuclear program, where issues such as uranium enrichment and fuel removal remain central to negotiations.
