Kazakh President Kassym‑Jomart Tokayev has sounded the alarm over falling water levels in the Caspian Sea, underscoring the grave repercussions for both the environment and economies of the surrounding states.
The president made these remarks during the 12th Summit of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS), held in Gabala, The Caspian Post reports via local media.
President Tokayev stressed the critical importance of establishing digital monitoring systems for irrigation, along with stronger safeguards for water resources. He called for a collaborative regional response, suggesting the creation of a joint program to address the issue.
“The Caspian Sea is gradually shrinking, and this is a matter of serious concern. The Caspian Sea has always held a special place for Turkic peoples. Its declining water levels are already affecting the region’s ecology and economy,” he stated.
Moreover, the president noted that Kazakhstan will assume the chairmanship of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Turkic States in 2026 and plans to introduce a new cooperation format in this sector.
Tokayev emphasized the crucial role of industrial cooperation in driving the economic development of OTS member countries.
“Kazakhstan will chair the Turkic Chamber of Commerce and Industry next year and will also propose a new framework for cooperation in this field. Currently, five international railway corridors pass through Kazakhstan, placing us at the crossroads of North and South, East and West. Today, 85 per cent of freight transported between Asia and Europe moves through Kazakhstan. Recently, a new railway line was commissioned, which is expected to increase freight capacity fivefold,” he said.
In connection with Kazakhstan’s upcoming chairmanship, Astana has put forward a program for industrial cooperation that will outline specific priority projects.
Tokayev also highlighted the importance of the Turkic Investment Fund: “It is essential to fully leverage the opportunities offered by this financial institution. This year, a meeting of the ministers of economy and trade of our countries will take place in Turkestan. I believe it would be appropriate to prepare a list of projects for funding by the Fund during this event. Cooperation in the industrial sector plays a significant role in diversifying our economies.”
