Kazakh Sappers Destroy Over 1,000 Munitions in Golan

Kazakhstan’s engineering and sapper group serving in the UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) is carrying out extensive mine-clearing operations in the Golan Heights.

Over the past eight months, the team completed 32 missions, detecting and destroying more than 1,000 explosive devices - including 23 improvised explosive devices (IEDs), The Caspian Post reports via Kazakh media.

This surpasses the previous rotation, which cleared over 500 munitions and six IEDs across 14 tasks.

Major Yernar Amantayuly, commander of the group, says most unexploded ordnance is found near populated areas, posing serious risks to civilians. The team receives alerts from UN staff, patrols, and local residents before conducting reconnaissance and planning safe disposal to avoid damage to nearby infrastructure.

Peacekeepers most often encounter artillery and tank shells, anti-personnel and anti-tank mines, drone warheads, and various IEDs - all remnants of long-standing conflicts in Syria. Their work continues to play a crucial role in reducing threats and improving security across the mission’s area of responsibility.

Earlier, the information went viral that Kazakhstan deployed its first independent peacekeeping mission to the Golan Heights.
